  1. Dentists, especially the ones who handle these implants, are likely all using bone grafts. The screw that goes into the bone is very large and the hole they make is pretty big, so they pack it with bone meal, powder or however form it comes in. They get a better fit. At some point these implants may give problems and if they have to take them out, they will pack the hole with cadaver bone. That in itself is a turn off to get these implants.

  2. It is a totally different and extra procedure to take bone out of the iliac crest, and it adds to the bill and the time the patient is on the OR table. . However, it was only the safe way to get healthy bone coming from the patient. Yes, now, it is hardly ever done unless it is a special request. The company that provided the cadaver bone dropped the ball by failing to have TB eliminated. Sterilization should have done it. However, they may wiggle out, if the patient signed a release and it was mentioned, in it. These companies are well informed as to what could go wrong with the bone graft, so it may cover what has happened to this young woman. Business as usual. Would not surprise me.

  3. The mother of the victim would have liked to know who the donor was. This is impossible as donors of tissues are not identified . The harvest is done by technicians, and later on the sterilization is done in the containers they put the tissues in. These containers get sterilized and TB, being a bacteria should have been eliminated. The problem lies with the manufacturing company of these donated tissues. It is bone, skin, arteries, veins...etc....lots of things are donated that will go anywhere in the country, only with the company name that handles the processing of these "gifts".......Years ago, the US would get cadavers from Russia but they were poorly checked so, not identified for diseases. Not everything will be eliminated by the sterilization process. So ? there is always a chance, something may happen when you accept a bone graft. Orthopedic procedures are very high on the list and so are maxilofacial procedures, who handle "problem" dental cases. Cadaver bone is often in needs for many procedures. It should be disclosed by the MD who does the procedure, but they rarely go into details about the tissues donations, and how they are handled. People would freak out. They are required to disclose these potential bone grafts, so maybe the ball was dropped , or the patient was eager to sign and get the procedure on the way. If she signed a release for the bone graft, we will never know what she was told. She is now dead. A lawsuit may not provide much relief for the family. Buyer, beware.

  6. I am pretty sure , such issue was mentioned in the release form, she signed, agreeing to the possible infections or complications that may occur. It is a legal document, patients should read, but most people do not read anything. They just sign. It was an unfortunate issue that evidently, came up during processing , but not qualified as negligence. It was evidently expected to be free of any contaminants. You never know. Just don't use any cadaver bone. That is the only way you can be safe.

  8. Patients need to carefully read every form they sign. I am pretty sure she signed a release, in order to get the bone and they have to go into details what may happen.

  10. Companies are in business to make money. Patients need to READ the fine print in the release document, before they sign. Most people do not read anything. They just sign and in some cases, they sign their life away. YOU have to know, what you sign !

  11. Not if it is specified in the form they have to sign, as disclosure. I bet she signed it.....and did not ask questions. The company may just be, totally in the clear.

  12. Of course and there is but nothing is absolutely , guaranteed to be totally "safe". It is why patients sign releases. They agree to take a chance, as they are looking for an improvement of their current condition. They are mostly hopeful and rarely skeptical.

  13. Correct. We never know exactly where the bone comes from and how safe it is or not. You can believe that surgeon would have had bone taken out of his hip, before he used cadaver bone. It is certainly faster to use cadaver bone, as it comes in a little jar. To do an extra incision and scrape the bone takes longer and they will charge more for that procedure, but it is certainly safer. The pain ? well, they give you some pharma to take care of that, anyway.
