  1. I became interested in Soviet Union at a very early age growing up in the US. When I was 8 years old I was given an old map of Far Eastern Russia. I dreamt of places like Vladivostok, Kamchatka and Sakhalin Island and always wondered what it was like there and how were the people that lived there. I’m 60 years old and never lost my like and wonder of Soviet Union. Thanks for all your video’s.

  3. We have a similar Soviet like Medical here in California. In the 1960’s i waited for hours waiting to be seen. It’s called Kaiser Hospital ;)

  4. Nice bike ride memories. Once when I was in hi school I rode my bike from near San Francisco to Monterey, Calif. It's a distance of a little over 100 miles. I did it in one day. It took me 14 hours.

  6. It would be interesting to see a video clip of what Ham radio in the days of the USSR was like. There weren’t a lot of Soviet hams in the air back then but I did manage to talk to a few on the 28 megahertz ham band from Russia in the Far East. I received a “QSL” card or record of our contact from Vlad in Sakhalin Island 8 months after our contact. I still have his card today.

  7. Molinya was the Soviet sattelite System in polar orbit at that time. I heard that also Central Soviet television also used those sattelites to distribute programming across the large country of USSR.

  12. One of my favorite progressive rock groups is called “Renaissance” from England. They were popular in the 70s and 80s. They made 2 songs during Soviet times “Kiev” and Mother Russia” great music. The lead singer Annie Haslam has a great voice.

  22. Back in the late 1980’s I was operating an Amateur Short Wave Radio station and made contact with a Russian on the island of Sakhalin in the Far East Pacific Ocean. We communicated on a frequency in the 10 meter jam radio band. We exchanged “QSL” Cards that are a record of our contact. It took his card almost a year to reach me in Calif. and the card paper looked like recycled cardboard or something like that. It’s one of my treasured contacts on Radio. I have always been interested in Russia Far East. Vladivostok reminds me a lot like San Francisco. Thanks for your video! Steve in N. California.

  23. I watched that Phil Donahue show when I was a kid. Phil married Marlo Thomas the daughter of the famous US entertainer Danny Thomas. Both Danny and Marlo are very involved with keeping St Jude hospital in US going.

My first experience in chatting with someone on Sakhalin came before the fall of Soviet Union through amateur radio. I still have his signal “qsl” card. It must have been very hard to get radio equipment during Soviet times. His station id was UA0FF

  28. 10 CC had the hit “I’m not in Love” it’s a mellow easy rock song. No violence I ever heard in their music. Most of the other artists of the heavy metal variety I would agree with Soviet thinking.

  32. A few years ago I found this series on Your Tube. It's all in Russian ? Someone mentioned to me that the presenters are from the Ukraine. I also learned that the lady presenter is named Nastaya. They made many episodes of Oreili i Reshka CCCP earlier in the series. It's a travel series to many of the former Soviet Republics and in Russia. In later years they have different presenters and travel all over the world. "Oreili i Reshka" in English is "Heads and Tails". A Guy and a Lady presenter flips the Soviet coin and the one that gets tails gets their vacation on a backpackers budget. The one that gets heads gets a no expense spared version of the vacation. I know little Russian but watching this has helped me to pick up new words and phrases. Here is the link to the series.   35. Have you ever checked out “Oreili Reshka CCCP” on YouTube? They travel to all the destinations of the former Soviet Union. It’s a great tv show. It’s in Russian I believe. Someone mentioned to me it’s produced by a company in Ukraine. Not To sure. The lady presenter Nastaya is really cute. Thanks for all your video’s!

  37. Were there any Soviet Ham radio operators in Ukraine when you lived there? My only contact was Russia Far East in 1980’s. The Russian call letters from the Far East in Soviet times began with the letters UA0.

  40. I wonder how they distributed the television signal from Moscow in the 70’s and 80’s across a country twice the size of the US. They must have had a network of microwave links across the country or had a coaxial cable network. Thanks for your video!

  41. FYI “Oreili Reshka” means Heads or Tales in English. They flip a coin and the presenter that gets heads has a lavish trip and the loser gets a budget backpacker vacation. They have fun no matter ;)
