My favorite parts of the video are of the test board and plant service center. These were the days before it all went automated. It was a very personable company back in the late 70’s. The work was hard. Maybe harder than today. Still good memories when I was a residence installer in the late 70’s. I’m still employed now by what Pacific Telephone became. I now work at AT&T Labs.

The part of Bell Labs that went with AT&T is still going strong. Now known as AT&T Labs. There are many projects ongoing now. The roll out of the new all digital 9-1-1 network ESINet. New mobile technologies and new video delivery systems along with development of a worldwide cloud based computer network. I have been a Bell System Employee and now AT&T for over 40 years and still working in the Labs.

I had a UHF 2 way radio in my dodge phone truck in 1979. We had a touch tone pad connected to the transmitter and could make radiotelephone calls with it.

The same company that brought you pink princess phones and chocolate trimline phones also made Nike Missiles that some were armed with Nukes. If you ever get to San Francisco take a tour of SF-88 in Marin Headlands. It's the last fully restored Nike Missile Base in the West Coast and maybe the US. It's now a park and a museum of the history of the Nike system before the SALT II and SALT III treaties in the Carter era shut them all down in the early 1970's. PBS "California's Gold" TV series with Hewell Howser did a program on the SF-88 base worth checking out. They just aired it on KQED channel 9 a few weeks ago. Jan 2017.

I love the Bell System Microphone!

Very timely video in the Summer of 2019 too! I first saw this video on a Betamax tape in my local garage at Pacific Bell. It was the summer of 1980. My phone truck was a gutless green dodge van with a 3 speed manual transmission on the steering wheel. It was some of the best times of my life!

I love the sound of those long distance MF tones and the clicks and kercheeps of 2600 hz! Also the sounds of those cross bar switches on Mother’s Day while stirring in the Communication technician’s desk.

Lol! I still have one of those 2554 wall mount "touch tone" telephones in my kitchen. Ours is white.

The bell system was the original equal opportunity employer. You will see women in these videos doing many of the assembly and forklift driving and central office wiring. They are great multitaskers.

Yes in 1984 at divestiture. Was an employee at that time and experienced divestiture. I’m still working at now at&t. Over 40 years of service. It’s still a great company. I have very fond memories of my time during the days of the Bell System. I now work as a 9-1-1 engineer testing the latest 9-1-1 systems that go into the police and fire stations across the US.

I remember watching this video at my garage when I was a residence installer for Pacific Telephone in Mountain View, Calif. we watched it on a Sony betamax video tape player ;)

Long live Pacific Telephone. I wish I still had my Army Green Color Dodge Van with the 3 speed manual transmission on the steering wheel and a governor on the engine to keep the phone man from speeding. I miss the sounds of dinging-rattling bells from the many Trimline, Princess phones and multi colored kitchen wall and desk phones.

Nobody. When the prospective buyers inquired of the asking price of the new home they were informed "Bell System Property. Not for Sale" :)

Pick up a western electric phone from a thrift store or eBay. They are great for emergencies and don’t need power to work. Get a 2500 set or a trim line phone or a princess phone. They are built like tanks and work indefinitely.

In the Pacific Bell Days Corporate Television made a lot of video's. Will any of those be made available in the future?

@Jbk0860 I’m retiring soon after 41 years working at the co. This time I think for good. It’s a very different company now from the Pacific Telephone days. Still it’s holding out and still going strong.

Where is George in 2020? Is he retired? I couldn't find him in phone on the Corp. Network. I love his video's.

I never knew there was a fault near Inglewood-Newport. Today in 2020 that area has grown much since this film was made in 1979.
4
Long distance operators were really pretty back in those days!

Check out Brian Hackney’s Earthquake docs of Calif. They are excellent too! Made at Channel 5 and Channel 4 in San Francisco.

@Jbk0860 hi James.there is remnants of the old bell system all over. One of the large At&t centers in Sacramento still have the old bell system logo on the entrance to the building on Marconi Ave.

@Fritz Donnerschlag keep listening. Your bell is about to ring ;)

Western Electric phones are the greatest! They last forever. Made in the USA. Western Electric is still in business making high end audio tubes and other things. Check them out.

These video’s are a national treasure. Is there any way to upload more of them?
3
The good ole days of the test board and the LAC and the local Plant Service Center :)

Western Electric and the Bell System did so much for the United States in times of War and in peacetime and what did they get? 1984 the Break up of the Best telephone companies. Thanks to Judge Harold Green. What did the world gain by this breakup really?

They played this video to us installers with pacific telephone in the 1970s it’s relevant today in 2023 like it was then. It’s good to be prepared. Keep flashlights, a generator. Food for 2 to 4 weeks. Just in case. You never know. This video was way before the 1989 quake in loma prieta ca. please be prepared.
