Take Tokmak and there is no overland resupply to anywhere to the west, other than the coastal road to Melitopol from Berdyansk, and that is within artillery range. Most Russian forces to the west would collapse into Crimea.

Alexander the Great, and on and on. We can't rely on this maxim to come to Ukraine's aid, so unfortunately, the heroes of Ukraine are just going to have to keep fighting until the last Russian boot leaves their soil.

  28.  @meilinchan7314  There was a huge amount of preparation for this attack, including amphibious landings on Crimea to knock out a radar system, and the recapture of some oil rigs which Russia had taken and placed radar on. Then there was softening up of the air defences, and missile attacks on radar installations in Crimea. There weree dummy missiles sent to distract the air defences, and then 2 different types of missiles used in the actual attack, with very different trajectories and pruposes. It's a big achievement, not easily repeated.

  61. That's not strictly the case. Autumn (now) doesn't have good weather for military action. It is wet, and everything turns to mud, bogging down vehicles and making all movements slow. Winter-proper, though, is very cold, and the ground freezes solid for months. Movement is much easier then.

  76. They've been stopping them for over 3 months. Russia is further back in Bakhmut now than it was a month ago. As with so much of this war, Ukraine lets Russia exhaust itself, and then will nip in with a big counterattack at a time of its choosing. Collapsing the Russian lines around Kreminna and getting in behind Sievierodonetsk, for instance, would mean The Russians attacking Bakhmut and the rest of the front lines in Donetsk would risk being attacked from the rear. The situation would be transformed, and without ever trying a frontal assault on the concentrations of troops around Bakhmut etc.

Targeting Tokmak puts them half way to Melitopol, so I suspect that's the most likely plan. Take Kherson, Nova Khakovka, Tokmak, Melitopol and destroy the Kerch bridge, and it will be very difficult for Russia to sustain Crimea.

The hydro plant is going to be an important power source when the war is over, and they'll want the water supply once Crimea is lberated. In the context of the war, though, the dam is a critical crossing point. Why would you blow up a crossing over a river when getting over that river is a critical part of the next phase of the military operations? The water supply to Crimea can be closed off just by shutting a sluice gate.

Russia has lost (killed, injured, captured) more men than it had in its initial invasion force (190,000). It has lost more tanks than were in it's initial invasion force. 2700 tanks gone mean you're now using T62s from the 1950s. It has lost 100% of the helicopters it had in the field at the start of the war, and most of the artillery too. It has lost 85% of the planes it had in theatre at the start of the invasion, plus the Black Sea fleet's flagship and a number of other major navy assets. You are right that that was the original goal, but it really, really isn't now. I think the most that Russia can aim for at the moment is holding on to Donbas and Crimea, and they're going to fail miserably at even that. The only possible reason for holding out in Kherson is because it controls the water supply to Crimea.

If they had, the Antonovsky bridge would have been taken out weeks ago. Russians have submarines in the Black Sea, and Ukraine doesn't. Russia has air superiority in the Kerch Strait area. Taking out the Kerch bridge is going to be a real test. A suicide bomber would be the favoured approach of many countries, but that isn't going to happen. So, we'll just have to wait and see how they do it, but I hope it's soon.

  349. There are good reasons not to attack Belgorod openly. Firstly, American equipment has been given to Ukraine on condition that it is only used defensively and not used to attack Russia. Secondly, it is explicit Russian doctrine that threats to Russian security allows a nuclear response. Picking off the odd military logistics target is one thing.....but attacking Bolgorod is another thing altogether. Wiser heads should prevail.

  388. Not so sure. There are multiple videos showing denris with a French label, as to be expected with Stormshadow. I think what happened is that Stormshadow penetrated the bridge entirely with it's first (penetrating) charge, and was in the lagoon by the time the second explosion went off. In other words, the bridge was too weak for it to work properly. If they adjust the fuses they may obliterate it next time.
