You have fallen into the trap of assuming that architects are in charge of what gets built. You're wrong. Architects get told by clients what they are going to build. Property developers have their own ideas, and these are dominated by the accounts department and the finance director. Us architects then spend the rest of the project trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, with no budget wriggle-room.

@danmerillat I agree somewhat with your sentiment, but you're clearly American. Your generalisation about glass skyscrapers certainly does not apply in most of Europe, where sky scrapers are a rarity.

@bart_u The sort of people who build multi-storey car parks and grey steel and glass office blocks aren't going to go to Quinlan Terry. Of course there is a place for quality architects doing quality, aesthetic work. That's me, on a small scale. I'm just saying don't blame the architecture profession for other people's crap buildings.

@abpast5319 The world has grown rather tired of architects telling the populace what they should like, and that new is better than old. The "I know best" architect should have died with Corbusier or Gropius. For 70 years people have said "I hate concrete boxes", but arrogant architects, developers and town planners have forced their taste into the built environment anyway. Enough. Oh, and I'm an architect.

@Comakino No no.........modernIST architecture is mostly terrible. That's a very different thing from modern architecture.

@buragi5441 Huh? You realise I'm an architect, don't you.

My broadest criticism of this project would be that it has involved the demolition and rebuilding of losts of buildings, which is unsustainable. It would have been nice to hear that some of the buildings had been refurnished and adapted, rather than knocked down and replaced.

@jaykilbourne1110 "Objective"? I'm not sure you understand the meaning of the word. I agree with your SUBJECTIVE assessment.....but you're making a habit of generalising. They're not in every city, and you opinion doesn't make something a fact.
