Given the litigious nature of the US, the effect would be total silence from all candidates or officials, because every single utterance would be scrutinised by opponents for an opportunity to bring charges. If you make politics so difficult, don't be surprised if the quality of politicians declines even further. What competent person would want to enter politics if an innocent comment saw them on trial or in gaol?

  27.  @JWHealing  My understanding, which may well be flawed, was that in the US jail was for those on probation/ awaiting trial, and prison for those who had been sentenced. (Or possibly the other way around).
