alienation.. people need to feel their lives have some meaningful purpose and a sense of community and connection to the people around them. Otherwise we are just animals lost in a sea of others that we are at odds with.. Modern society serves us the opposite of meaningful connection and it causes a lot of mental health issues when you cannot mentally frame your life in a way that makes it feel significant.. In the past we needed and relied upon each other. Now it feels like an every man for himself mentality had taken over, and its as if no individual person is truly valued by the rest. I think that is what is at the root of what we are seeing happen around the world today. Without community and support and meaning, people are essentially feral.
