Unless, of course, you understand that female rights and empowerment is a 20th century idea. Women in the USA have only had the right to vote since 1919. In 1980, I, a 30 year old with an engineering job, could not get credit in Wilkes-Barre, PA without my father's cosignature. My sister, a real estate agent was told the same thing in the same city at 27 years of age. Women of the 16th century were property, to be put in play as their fathers or husband's chose. The only exception was a widow who had some financial independence unless she married again.
