Daniella Castillo--You might be interested in KoKo's word for "ring". She calls it a "finger bracelet". She also calls "watermelon", "candy water". Koko is the gorilla who has been taught sign language.

@rogeriopenna9014 --More correctly, they are called phalanges, both the little bones of the fingers and the toes. Carpal, metacarpal, phalanges for the bones of the hand; tarsal, metatarsal, phalanges for the bones of the feet for lay people. Medical personnel get much more precise in the terminology.

My classmates and I had to take two years of Latin in order to be eligible for college, back in the day. We were taught "wen ee, weed ee week ee". We also had 6 months of Greek...both were invaluable when taking apart affixes from root words and discerning meaning without constantly referring to a dictionary. "All Gaul is divided into three parts..." De Bello Gallico--Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres.

This is what is missing in public school education--a GOOD phonics/language acquisition teacher. The -ough has all those sounds you list and how they are pronounced is the result of from where in England the word originated and from what original language it originated. The -ough is one of the last sounds/spellings that is taught in phonics instruction. Yes, English has some odd sound-spelling combinations. However, when children are learning to read, the "rules" work well enough for them to begin decoding. Remember that there are sight words a child must memorize as well...a thousand of them, depending on whether or not you use the Fry List or one other list. Children who have NOT had a solid language acquisition teacher who is well versed in phonics instruction as well as teaching the list of common sight words (don't worry...they're broken up into 100 words per grade) cheats a child who, without that solid instruction, will struggle with English spelling and pronunciation. Look up this list and see, now, why English is a little bit...complex. https://vividmaps.com/languages-british-isles-throughout-history/
