  170. Ebony--As a now-retired teacher, I will tell you that any teacher with a lick of sense keeps, in the classroom with the "emergency bag", a plastic bin of games ideas, toys, reading books, coloring books, etc. for these occurrences. Why? Fire drills and earthquake drills are required in CA. Usually, they only take up about 15 minutes or so while procedures are practiced. However, "fire drills" can be the real thing. At one school in which I taught, an electrical fire caused the entire school to be evacuated for the rest of an afternoon until dismissal. While we waited for the fire department to do their job, my class played "duck, duck, goose", had fables read to them (part of the curriculum), had contests to see who could compute 100 addition and subtraction worksheets the fastest, identified the cloud types in the sky (science), played "duck, duck, goose" (physical exercise), etc. The novelty of the fire drill wears off quickly. Depending upon the contracted class size (and special programs limiting class size), an elementary school teacher can have 20-34 students under his/her auspices and control. These children are now outside of their regular classroom environment. Two to three hours outside waiting to be cleared to re-enter the classroom is a very long time to keep children interested, active, and engaged in constructive behaviors. The younger these children are, the more challenging that task becomes. It's easy to second-guess and criticize when you are NOT part of the educational system. Yes, there are flaws in it. But, keep in mind, schools drill for fire and earthquake. They do NOT drill for on-site murder-suicide events. Unfortunately, it begins to look as if they may very well have to--especially in a cess-pit such as San Bernardino.

  234.  @Marta-to1mf  Absolutely true. But keep this in mind. In the wake of WWII American children were taught, in their last year of high school, the responsibilities and privileges of being a citizen of America. Look up your state's Ed Code and find the curriculum requirements for various grades, but mostly 5th, 8th, and 11th grade American history. Civics was 12th grade. The pledge was no longer recited. The American flag was removed from classrooms by Mexican teachers. Patriotic songs no longer are sung. There is nothing inherently wrong in teaching multiculturalism, but what happens when children no longer are taught that America is a melting pot, but, instead, a tossed salad where the immigrant doesn't identify as an American, but as a [fill in the blank] who just happens to live here and TAKE from our nation without strengthening the Republic as the immigrants from two centuries ago did as America evolved? Granted, there were abuses. Ask the Irish who came here as indentured servants, working for 21 years to regain their freedom. Ask the Italians who were denigrated until great numbers of them served in WWII. Ask the Dutch who worked on lands in New York State owned by a patroon that they could not leave. Ask the Hessians who were brought here to fight in the Revolution and only embraced their task when they realized they could OWN land of their own. Ask the Polish, Lithuanian, Slavic, and other Eastern Europeans who were brought here to work in the anthracite mines of PA and coughed out their lungs due to a disease called anthrasilicosis (black lung). Ask the Chinese laborers, and the French casket girls, and the young girls who worked in horrible conditions in factories. Yes, and ask the Native Americans and the African descendants of slaves, and any other group. Then think on these words: "America, my country. In her intercourse with other nations, may she always be in the right. But my country, right or wrong." Originally attributed to Stephen Decatur.

  244. I taught in that hell hole for a quarter century. This shooting was inevitable. I told administrators and the teacher's association that NO ONE should be permitted past the office who was NOT authorized to be at the site--and I was ignored. Any parent/guardian who needs to take a child out of school SHOULD be made to wait IN THE OFFICE while an aide or an office worker takes the Ed Code-required--dismissal slip to the classroom, hands it to the teacher, and takes the child to the waiting parent. Aside from emergency personnel, vetted vendors such as school photographers, or assembly performers, NO ONE should be permitted into the classroom areas. Certainly no non-identified school personnel should be allowed on the campus without a district designated escort or supervision by a district administrator. Obviously, just signing in--as this a$$hole did is NOT enough protection. Certainly it wasn't for two children and their teacher this morning. Sites such as Vermont and Rio Vista have virtually NO protection from walk-ons as principals do NOT keep the gates locked. Parents would scream (and I mean scream) that they had rights. At Rio Vista, parents would walk right on to the playground (fenced) and, if asked to sign in to the office--as the CA Ed Code requires--would become hostile, volatile, or aggressive. This in a town with frequent drive-by shootings, 60 plus murders in 2016, and gang/drug activity. San Bernardino is a cess pit of crime, drugs, violence, and I am so glad that I am not in that hell hole any more!

  245. In one breath, the lead-in to this speaks of searching for a motive. Under the dateline of the article, the notice is maid of "Officials say gunman had a history of violence, domestic charges". There's your answer. A man with a history of domestic abuse and violent behavior acting out his rage against his spouse. The bigger question here should be: WHY is ANYONE permitted onto San Bernardino City Unified School District grounds past the sign-in at the office? Keep in mind that San Bernardino has had 60 plus murders in 2016. Drive-by shootings and school lock-downs are commonplace. Fences around school grounds in most--NOT ALL--of San Bernardino schools restrict entry onto the premises. That, at least, is the theory. It's not always practiced West side sites such as Vermont and Rio Vista permit unidentified (in clear violation of Ed Codes regarding access to school property, students, and school personnel) to walk over the grounds without signing in. Teachers who have requested that the miscreants sign into the office for a "visitor's badge" have been verbally chastised and advised NOT to do that again. The parent posses there have even been permitted to walk onto the playground unimpeded. Why? Principals pander to the clientele and don't want the district offices calling them when the parents march downtown to complain if the Ed Code is enforced. "Make it go away" is a common mantra in SBCUSD to administrators who want to keep their jobs. The only surprise with this shooting is that one like it didn't happen sooner than yesterday (4/10/17). District policy should be to require anyone who is not authorized by the district to be on the grounds (district-identified employees, assembly presentation personnel, emergency personnel, etc.) remain IN THE OFFICE and NOT on the grounds. Does your child have a medical appointment? Then go to the office, sign in (as required by the Ed Code) after showing proper ID and sign the Ed Code document allowing you to remove the child from the site. An office worker or aide should take that dismissal slip to the classroom, give it to the teacher, and take the child to the office. Do you want to visit your spouse/significant other in the classroom during school hours? Whatever for? Domestic issues should be resolved on your own time, NOT the district's. This wasn't an emergency. Even if it were, personal problems shouldn't be brought into the classroom environment. The head honchos at the district office will tell news personnel that what I've outlined is standard practice. Well, OBVIOUSLY, it's NOT, since there now are a murdered teacher, a murdered INNOCENT child, and another wounded child to show for yesterday's tragedy. Keep in mind that this guy's "visits" were common enough that the school staff were familiar with him. Teachers are paid to TEACH; interruptions impede the number of instructional minutes that are utilized--especially in a district as low-performing as SBCUSD really is (and that's a matter for a different time).

  660. Ah, yes...the "Honor" Society, mid-20th century. Only the "elite" were accepted into it at my high school. You had to have the right parents, the right last name, the right social contacts in that hick town. No matter how good your grades were, no matter in what activities one participated, no Italians, Lithuanians, Polish, Welsh, Slovaks, Greeks, or other ethnic "minorities" were welcome. Then, one day, when school started, the "Honor" Society was called out of the four college-bound classes of students. Each one of them was smirking as they left our group/class/section as they were sure that more honors were being piled upon them. They didn't return to class for a couple of days. Turns out that the little buggers had created a "cheating machine", passing answers to tests between the four sections of college-bound students as classes passed during the day. I was one of the editors of the yearbook; we had to call back the photographer to take a photo of the decimated (by about 75%) "Honor" Society to put in the yearbook that year. We were all warned not to speak a word of it, as it would hamper their admission to college. A three-day suspension was the only consequence they got (aside from not getting to wear their gold braid when they "walked" on graduation night). I never did find out which teacher "outed" them. I always suspected the new Civics class teacher, as he was a social pariah among the teaching staff for the rest of the year and wasn't re-hired for the following year.
