Chris B--My US Naval service was decades before yours. The amount of money a military service can spend upon food is determined by the funding of Congress. I remember how much things improved from the Carter administration after Reagan was inaugurated. People who have never served in our nation's armed forces have strong opinions that are not based in actual experience. They resent any benefits we receive by laying our lives on the line, but lack the intestinal fortitude to do so themselves. It is, apparently, so much easier to snark at veterans.

Gulabsingh Singh--You know little of the military. Each of our branches of the military have a specific mission. I suggest that, instead of persisting in arguing, you look up each specific branch and its mission statement. Those of us who ARE active duty or veterans are weary of your blathering.

Gulabsing Singh--US soldiers are rarely at sea (unless being moved to battle areas by troop ship) as the army is a land force. So, they would not eat aboard ship, except in rare circumstances. US sailors and Marines go to sea. So does the Coast Guard. So, the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard personnel WOULD eat at sea. The Air Force is what the name implies, an air military force and, except in rare instances, would not get their meals aboard ship, either. Just FYI, some US naval personnel serve as Naval air personnel, which is NOT part of the US Air Force.

Gulabsingh SIngh--And airmen, sailors, and Marines don't? An army moves on its stomach, but so do the other branches of service. MREs are nutritious and provide energy, but no one would call them "good food".

Ebony Arnold--The reporter WAS rude. She's probably jealous of the young petty officer because that Navy female will get to do more, see more, and travel more than the reporter could ever imagine. That reporter doesn't have the b*lls to enter the military, but she'll show animosity towards any woman who DOES. I saw a lot of behavior like that during my time in the US Navy. We females in uniform just considered the source(s).

Va Gina--As a US Navy veteran, I've spent my fair share of time "smelling a Navy ship galley" along with fellow officers and crew members? They are scrupulously clean and undergo frequent inspections by senior enlisted and officers to ensure that the health and safety codes (far more stringent in the military than in the civilian dives, and the military inspectors are far more thorough than the county health people who pretend to inspect the food dives in any community) are followed.

Thank you for the kind words. By the way, I also get a kick out of the ones here who comment on what a skate job some of these sailors have, not knowing that some duty is ancillary duty (I remember well Starboard and Port Watches and 8 on, 8 off work schedules) and others are awaiting discharge, or schools, etc., and are in temporary assignments while they're waiting.
