I'm a retired teacher. If you're a taxpaying citizen, or if you have children enrolled in a public school system, it is YOUR RIGHT to peruse teaching materials (and suggest alternate readings from your state's list of recommended texts), receive a copy of teacher lesson plans, sit in on specific classes (usually limited to 15 minutes), "shadow" your child through a school day to ensure that the child isn't the object of reprisals or bullying, etc. You are ENTITLED to weekly progress reports and daily behavior reports. You have a RIGHT to request Student Study Team (academics and possible learning handicaps) and/or Behavior Study Team (behavior/possible handicapping conditions)or a Family Study Team (for assistance with family issues such as housing, health services, dental referrals, eye care, etc,). Make your request IN WRITING and sent by certified mail that must be signed for. Send a certified copy to the principal AND the school district superintendant. The meeting MUST be scheduled within a specific time frame of working days (weekends, holidays, non-teaching days don't count). If you don't know those timeliness, the school will try to delay until end of school year, and you might have to start all over the following year. The school cannot discriminate against you or your child. EVERYTHING related to public education is available online from the federal and state and county level. Remember education-related stuff is .edu
