@anitathorp6455 I was a preschooler when I learned that, if I sat very quietly under her farmhouse sink (no cabinets under it), I could hear very interesting gossip about neighbors, family members, and church or business people. Once she and my mother were discussing the promiscuity of a local girl. My grandmother said, "One would think that she had been born with ball bearings in the heels of her shoes." I was four and needed elaboration. So, from the space beneath the sink, a chirpy little voice piped up, "What are ball bearings?" One solid swat on my bum and an exile to the living room to watch afternoon kids' shows taught me a valuable lesson...you know, that one about children being seen and not heard.
