  1. There is a book about the Vatican's secret archives, where untold numbers of ancient documents are moldering away, as there aren't enough workers to keep them in good order/save them. As I read this book, I began to wonder just how much of that pile might be ancient Roman records. After all, the ancient Romans kept careful records and the emerging Roman Catholic church modeled itself and its hierarchy on paternalistic, record-keeping Rome.
