When I lived near my grandparents' poultry farm, we had a small army of cats who kept the mice and rodent population under control.  Corn cribs, granaries, and the rooms in the chicken coop where the grains were mixed to feed the poultry were prime targets for the critters and those critters also attracted snakes (egg-eaters).  Keeping rodents controlled meant fewer slithery reptiles as well as healthier poultry.  So, we really didn't care where they roamed.  My grandfather called them "working cats".  Sadly the farm no longer exists and the cats I've had in my adult life NEVER roam--they are NEVER out of the house.
