Because all post Soviet republics are well aware of Russia's strength and influence over them. Secondly, Russia defends Syria because they have naval base there which gives Russian ships a chance to use its military ships in Mediterrenian. Also Russia sells guns to Syria. Russia has strong interests in Middle East, if not then why they helped Iran to build nuclear plants and develop what it develops ? ? ?  just like Iran ,Syria is another ally of Russia in Middle East.
