IMO it's media's fault for voluntarily supporting those policies that took EU to its current financial crisis, media should always act as a GOVT WATCH DOG, investigating govt policies and then publicly (TV News included) asking tough Qs like "you're spending more than your budget and revenue" "why you don't care about national debt", "how long you're gonna be able to borrow money to cover your huge spending appetite", etc. EU media is fully co-responsible for EU's financial crisis.

I've never argued that each country is different and each of those major offenders reacted differently on how to tackle their own financial situation BUT what all had in common: SOCIAL POLICIES they put in place during those times and b/c their govts strongly believed in those particular social policies & entitlements they heavily over-reached to try create a society where everybody relies on govt = NANNY STATE. Kids have parents, parents have assets, aka houses and/or money in the bank (savings accounts, right?), also smart parents open such savings accounts for their kids since they (their kids) are very young and deposit a small amount every month, ultimately is for the future of their kids, right? Also colleges are less expensive than universities. I lived in SWE for 3 yrs before '91, ppl on welfare here in CDA have more money to buy newer cars and clothes than those living in that socialistic "paradise". Swedes, same for rest of Nordics, have a very modest lifestyle compared to CDNs or Americans. Rest on your list are of a very insignificant importance in EU and rest of the world. Regardless, 95% of all Euronews videos are about austerity measures in GR, SP, POR, FR, IT, etc.

You allow ppl to own something they really dream of, car, house, etc., but when they ask for credit you the bank evaluate the financial situation of that person, you ask for LEGAL proof of income and based on that income documentation you approve OR reject the credit application, right? or you recommend to go for a cheaper car or house if you really want the loan, right? You do not give loans to ppl on welfare or very low income knowing they will never be able to repay the loan!

GER is the only positive example of a sort of nanny state but NOT a real nanny state, rather a hybrid, they have a very strong and extremely competitive industry that can sustain a lot of social spending, UK is similar, but all other EU states rely on the politics of the moment, and when they get it wrong they can screw up the whole EU.

That's BAD, subprime lending is the main reason for the 2008 financial crisis in U.S. Tons of articles about this very issue, not one presenting a positive picture on this very banking "feature"! Also that was a socio-political aspect behind the subprime landing, banks were forced by Congress to approve loans to (mostly) minorities (blacks) regardless of their financial or work situation, unemployed or on welfare.

I'm a CONSERVATIVE therefore I believe in the unlimited power of FREE MARKET, that includes as fewer regulations as possible (money laundry, fraud or other criminal activities are the obvious exceptions) for private businesses, and in a free market system aka capitalism bankruptcy is part of the game, banks or auto industry included, personally I was 101% against banking AND auto bailouts of 2009, therefore I am against ALL bailouts, EU ones included, IRE, GR, Cyprus, etc.

The very first chart on the left side, the one that shows govt revenues, expenditures and economic growth from 2000 to 2009, for each of those 10 years expenditures (spending) was higher than revenue and the annual real growth rate of GDP way bellow spending AND revenue, when you spend MORE than you have for such long period of time = financial bankruptcy. PORTUGAL IS A BANKRUPT COUNTRY.

The first chart on the left shows their ratio btwn govt spending AND revenue, most of the time pretty much at the same level or very little + or -. Why Portugal, GR, SP, IT, etc., did not follow Sweden's way of govt spending vis-a-vis revenue, I have no idea whatsoever as I do not live in EU. Can you name me a MAJOR EU news media that is NOT sympathetic to the protesters in GR, SP, FR, IT, Portugal, etc.?

Mortgage is NOT a right or an entitlement.

  28. Continued... Personally I have NOTHING against PRIVATE student loans, so offered by private banks and NOT government. It's up to the private banks to set their own interest rates for a particular student loan W/O any govt intervention. Most of the time you hear of such student loan issue BEFORE elections, when political candidates mostly leftists start promising that "if you vote for me I will lower the student loans", etc., and after that... and if they do it, who pays for that???
