The Berlin I visited in '81, '83 & '85 was called EAST Berlin and you had a white and very ugly double WALL separating life in the COMMUNIST Gulag and the American/British/French FREEDOM sectors, I will never forget how that wall looked like and the DDR border guards just waiting to shoot you if you tried making your way to FREEDOM, right behind Brandenburg Gate on the W Berlin side you have a small cemetery where lots of E Germans were killed trying to get to W Berlin.
