The irony is that people identify as British (or any nation) simply because they happen to live on territory owned by the ruling class (an old Monarchy in this case). Without this ruling class, "The United Kingdom" as a concept would not exist (it's in the name). When people are raised to believe in the nation, which is meant as a social construct to govern them, they internalize it as their identity demanding unconditioned allegiance. Ousiders joining the nation, are quickly accused of not being true members simply because they became British by choice, a choice a "true" British never had! Nationalism, a system meant to pacify and rule over them, becomes their sense of self and pride! The working class, the have-nots, are the prime target of the nationalistic agenda, because potentially they have the power to go after the landlords, property owners and bosses by their sheer numbers. Turn off electricity over the weekend in a major city, watch the looting unfold, there is no such thing as a common good in a class based society if not enforced by police and state power. But national allegiency ensures that these social tensions are subsummized under "what is good for the nation" always at the expense of the working class, those who don't own property, stock or companies (Ask Not What Your Country Can Do For You...). The national narrative is popular among democratic as well as fascists leaders. However since democracies depend heavily on nationalism, they can easily become fascist Fürhrer states if nationalists perceive the nation in danger, since fascism represents the ultimate form of the nation state ideology, where all (class) differences are put into service for the alleged greater good of the nation. Democratic politicians are unable to critizise or prevent fascism at that fundamental level, they can only argue which side represents the "good" kind of patriotism. Democrats can and will never challenge nationalism and patriotism itself as it would end democratic rule. To actually combat fascism not just morally, the nation-state ideology must be dismantled and the false narrative of a common good in a class society must go. The class society must go.
