In my experience, signs of a bad manager: - Doesn’t hold to their end of the promise. - Can’t explain clearly why they can’t promote (what do you need to work on, does the company not have enough funds, etc). - Is technically weak. They don’t understand good system design or understand key aspects of codebase. - Doesn’t protect their employees. - Blatant toxic traits, harasses people, etc. - Acts as an echo for their manager (ie they are just a lapdog). - No ambition. - Doesn’t help monitor the system (ie dashboards, alerts, takes part in on call). - Doesn’t keep up with modern technologies and cant help decide what’s best fit for team. - Isnt a well rounded engineer or specific expert. - Isnt socially aware, has good reading comprehension skills, and communicates clearly.

He gives terrible or generic advice at best. He’s not an expert in his field. He got really lucky to get into Amazon when it was easier to get in and ended up staying somewhere long enough where they gave him eventual promotion.

@tazbo28 It’s not just senior devs but so many juniors who don’t even have jobs telling you how to get a job. They make 10-20 minute long videos with the same 2-3 points of advice everyone has

@RLleeo Only do the field if you enjoy coding or are extremely studious and can LC and system design grok like a beast. If you weren’t top test score kind of guy + good technical presentation skills, it’s not meant for you. Anyone can get a low paying tech job which is equally soul sucking with little to no human interaction. Otherwise there’s so many other jobs especially trade school that make more and probably healthier for you. Tech is oversaturated and will always be. I’m thinking of switching out after much over a decade of working in it. You’ll also never meet women in tech. Even if you’re peak fit and honestly tech girls (even cute ones) are lamest girls to date. Lawyers, doctors, dentists, scientist girls are way more fun. Software is also a very useless skill unless you plan to build your own tech. It’s pretty much lousy at fixing things around the house or raising kids or improving savings

@Az22490 It’s a non translatable skill that isn’t used much in life. For example, trade school helps you get money and fix stuff around your own home. Programming just isn’t used in real life that much. Women in tech usually split into two large buckets. Kind of weird/annoying (devs) or kind of shallow/narcissistic (product managers). Obviously this my personal experience and your mileage may vary.

A bunch of companies laid off today including Amazon, Salesforce, etc

The fallacy you're talking about is also known as fallacy of division.
