  1.  @malaskomen9204  Java was also the stronghold, a foot on the ground in Asia, a hub for all the Asian trade. The VOC did most of it's trade in Asia and was created with the monopoly on all trade east of the Cape to wage war against the Spanish Empire. Greed is always a factor but the Dutch dominated European trade and were getting filthy rich from that. Government got involved with the trade because the Spanish Empire, including Portugal, was using overseas money to fight the Dutch Republic's 80 years war for Independence. Because of the distances, this war and trade hub had to be self supporting.
