A bit weird to start with the French. The Swiss federation was recognized in 1648, the Dutch Republic had been independent since 1581 and was arguably the first modern nation state despite being a quite lose federation. It has the oldest national anthem and truly national flag (as opposed to monarch's flag) for a reason. Later Britain became the UK, also a nation state rather than just a monarchy. France kind of developped towards a nation state through the centralist power of an absolutist monarch first.

If you want government to serve the people it has to do so by laws, so you need a jurisdiction, a territory with borders therefore, and you need a defined people to serve. The people who were born on that territory for example. Everything good about modern society is unthinkable without nationalism.

@EternalShadow1667 No, WWII was fought over imperialism. Nationalism is the alternative to imperialism at one side and tribalism at the other side, and is historically the alternative to absolute monarchism in which the monarch defines the unit to be governed. Nationalism has brought us the nation states with their rule of law, civil rights and democracy, and subsequently worker's rights, environmental protection, taxing multinationals, housing plans, infrastructure, all to serve the people. The modern imperialists, the globalists, try to discredit nationalism by falsely claiming WWII was caused by nationalism and ignite tribalism because they don't want to pay taxes and don't want to have limited supply of legally protected workers. Their financial interests don't want to be submitted to democratic national laws because those tend to serve the people rather than multinational business. The Nazis were both tribalist through aryan and imperialist through war for expansion. The globalists are much like them and also love censorship, fixation on race, medical experimentation, political selective prosecution and non prosecution of political violence and entanglement of business, government and media.

@EternalShadow1667 My posts get removed here for pointing out that Nazi Germany was imperialistic and tribalistic rather than natiolist. Anyway, politically nationalism is primarily about jurisdiction over a territory for a defined people. That is a necessity for democracy and rule of law, which are under attack by the globalists/imperialists, who are also the ones smearing the only alternative, nation states, as racist and the ones removing my posts.
