Had nothing to do with muslims. The Dutch always respected the local religions and the Indonesian nationalism also had nothing to do with islam. I might be a shock to many muslims, but it is actually possible to respect other people's religion even when you're in power. Ironically, the Indonesian nationalists sided with the fascist Japanese. And after the Japanese were beaten they claimed to be ready for independence and showed this by going on a slaughter of everybody that was not pure blooded Indonesian. About 30.000 whites, mixed race and Chinese were murdered because of their skin colour. This was the reason for the Dutch military action. That was successfull, they had almost full control back and the slaughter of innocent civilians had stopped, but the christian American government forced the Dutch to move out to have Indonesian independence immediately rather than let the Dutch take their time, who had already decided upon eventual Indonesian independence decades earlier. The USA wanted to end colonialism to make way for their neocolonialism, same exploitation, but without the responsibilities. So the Dutch had a racist slaughter by the Germans, no, not on their way to France (why keep people making this bullsit up?), then a racist slaughter by the Japanese and then a racist slaughter by the Javanese. The Javenese subseqeuntly colonized the Moluccas and Papua New Guinea, where the people still rather have the Dutch in charge. Still, nothing to do with muslims whatsoever, other than that thanks to the Dutch legacy, Indonesai is the only muslim majority country with freedom of relgion.

@tamiozdemir My grandparents had nothing to do with Indonesia. Why do so many Indonesians seem to think that what eventually became their country was of huge importance to the Dutch? I don't feel guilty, the whole idea of people ruling themselves, which I support, originated in the Netherlands. I'd like to have seen independence for the different peoples of Indonesia come about in a more patient and orderly fashion, and the Javanese government be less of new colonizer.

@DutchTunisian I wouldn't consider a dirty war equally bad to racist mass killings of civilians, but it's bad too. The point is not the criticism of the Dutch, but the lack of criticism for the Javanese nationalists and their colonialism. I was watching a Dutch documentary on the subject of Papua New Guinea last week, and they presented it like the Indonesian soldiers were figthing the just cause for Papuan independence there. They weren't, the Javanese never had anything to do with the Papuas, they never sailed there, their only claim to it was because the Dutch who controlled their islands controlled that island too. Between most of the Indionesian islands there was besides the question of self determination of people at least some common culture and cultural exchange making them somewhat of a single entity before the Dutch, and a lot more during the Dutch control of the early 20th century. But New Guinea has a completely different and seperate culture. If the Dutch had controlled Australia and New Zealand too, the government in Java would submit the Aboriginals and the Maori too? And that would be right? The principle which I support that made that the Dutch had to leave also means that Indonesia has no legitimate claim to Papua New Guinea whatsoever.
