When Surinamese nurses came to the Netherlands to work in the 1950s they were surprised by the shower situation too, but the other way around. The Surinamese were used to showering or bathing once or twice a day, the Dutch had communal bath houses because of lack of living space, especially afer WWII and setlled for a daily wash from the tap. I'm sure there wouldn't have been showers in Suriname or for the not so indiginous Surinames people without colonialism and capitalism.

Civilization is as much about the exchange of ideas as of goods and resources, and deserts, rain forests and predator infested savannahs certainly don't help with that. Africa would have basically to invent air travel when on other continents people started boating and sailing to keep up. But comparison to Europe is a bit nonsensical because something unique happened there about 500 years ago, in the sense that a few things came together to put the civilization there on a trajectory of ever accelerating development like no civilization ever had before. An exponential one with the time between society changing inventions and innovations becoming a matter of decades and years rather than centuries and millenia. That caused globalization too and therefore the civilizations of the world to meet or clash. I think in Africa contrary to most of Asia the difference at the point of contact was a bit too big for having the full benefit of exchange and the mentality to embrace it.
