There's the right wing bs about the gas money spent on welfare again, and even the Delta works. Both changes preceed the discovery of the gas field and you could as well claim that the gas paid for the tax break on mortgages. Stupid rich does not apply, it's a lot of money but it's only the largest gasfield in the EU because gasfields are rare in the EU. Government wants to definitively close the field and thereby rule past it's time and prevent their successors from being wiser. It's mainly symbolic as it won't stop the earthquakes and the problems of the people have much more to do with how government didn't handle the damages. Closing off the tap comes instead of reinforcements, and Shell and Exxon would have to pay up. So it only helps Shell and Exxon to avoid the bills and leave the Dutch people with the costs while they have taken their profits outside the country.
