  1. A shame you use the English BS-narrative about the VOC, the Dutch East India company. The Dutch middle class was well developped before it started paying dividend in 1631 and the huge wealth came from dominating European trade, industry and even the good old herring fishery was more profitable than peak VOC. The VOC only did the trade East of the Cape in Africa. It took those ships 2 years to return with goods and Europeans consumed a lot more wheat from close by than nutmeg. That the British couldn't compete in European trade and had to move to India doesn't mean it didn't exist.
