Lancia had a V4 in the 60's and 70's, the gorgeous Fulvia coupe, and the Saab had a V4 to replace the 2-stroke in the Saab 96, it was also put in the Sonnet. Ford appears to have had one to, but there is no modern V4. I think the main advantage was it shorthness for placement entirely in front of the front axle, longitudually, which worked great for those very light fwd's. The Lancia had a very narrow V so it had one cylinderhead with two cam shafts.

It's not that I have always disliked automatics, it just only used to work nice with a big torquey engine. Then you could blame either one of them at the gas station. For small cars it used to be terrible, the gas consumption of a big car, while slow and unresponsive.
