Diesel was fyscally promoted around 2005 because a window dressing effort had to be made for CO2 while not reducing mileages. Less CO2, more health endangering pollution was not an issue. Diesels also got a lot more gasoline like around that time. But some people loved it before that. My uncle for example who did more than 100.000 km a year in Germany loved his Mercedes 200D in the 80's, the W124, that was a really, really slow car. He loved not having to fill up a lot and it just powering on on torque, audibly. I never felt it, but there is a love for just old fashioned slow diesels.
