The VW Bus came about because Ben Pon, head of VW import in the Netherlands, went to visit the factory in Germany not just to order Beetles, but also to tell them was a lot of demand for a simple cheap van in the Netherlands. He made them a very child like sketch based on the Beetle chassis, luckily the VW designers stuck to this child like simpicity giving it it's iconic look.
