And since the recurring theme of this channel, inspired the communists to name a manufacturer of 2 stroke sedans after it.

@dnocturn84 It sounded like Das Kapital to me, but German is not my native language.

I think the trick was in their transgenerational thinking, every lord building further on their mighty noble family and a mighty building to keep also future generations safe and mighty.

Large windows have become a lot cheaper over the ages, often during more peaceful times. So some might have added palace like things later in of many extra builds. In that sense vulnerable palaces displayed more power, 'I got everything under control here, no one comes near with a trebuchet'. But many are fakes from the 18th and 19th century medieval romanticizing.

Neuschwanstein was a huge disappointment to me as a 12-year old. It felt fake because it was when it was build. I like my castles to have seen some battle.

@SamHannes The Netherlands is not only half water, it also was already highly urbanized in the late Middle-Ages. So there are a lot of fortified cities and the nobility didn't have much power there so a lot of fortresses were just that and had no people living there as lord. Earth walls were more effective against canonballs and it's more of a clay and brick country than stone and quarries, with the soggy soil not easy to build heavy walls on. Still it is said to have over 1200 castles, many probably with wet moats or build in water rather than relying on huge walls. I think the typical European castle is the product of a noble family living with a garrison to control a wide surrounding rural area by sending out armoured horsemen when necessary while offering protection against rivalling warlords. Lots of castles are on a mountain or hill top to make them effective, and there isn't many of that. The Netherlands had only limited geography and politics suiting that.
