  1. There are a lot of weird boat lifts in Belgium and Eastern and central Europe. If you balance it, which is the point of this construction, you only need a couple of horsepower. Same for bridges. It's typical late 19th century when lots of heavy stuff needed to be shipped through industrializing countries with canal and river systems seperated by a huge height difference. We have lots of lock systems in the Netherlands too, but usually it's about 30cm. If you have to make a 70ft height difference that way you need an awful lot of locks. Here we just build canals over roads to keep the right height. The most spectacular engineering is in the flood defences though.
