  1. It's a bit of an issue in a globalized world where we translate it, but let's not forget that American is an English word and among the native English speakers it was a correct distinction. The Spanish speaking Americans would not call themselves Americans but Americano's I guess. Also a bit of confusion or taking more name than you are entitled to comes with reach over the world. I myself am from The Netherlands/Holland/the Low Countries, where the people are and speak Dutch, which is the anglified version of Deutsch which is German for German. Those things happen in a world with different languages but there something of power in it too. The Russians got credit for being the whole Soviet Union, the EU claims the whole of Europe for itself by calling itself that, 'the world' was used by Europeans for the known world i.e. Europe and the mediterranean, and let's not start about the Romans.
