Traditionally especially German cars were sold barebone to make them attainable for the most customers but also because they wanted to be seen as worth the engineering, the reliable machine that you need rather than being about your desires. People could subtly show of their wealth with more luxury and bigger engines. In the 80s if you spend a median annual salary on a 2 litre Mercedes you would have to spend another 2800 on a fith gear, 1300 on an arm rest and 700 on a map reading light, numbers like that. There is one McDonalds with two buildings for both directions of traffic I presume.
