  2.  @juliemart4153  Nor in South-Africa, both have developped from 1600's Dutch in different directions. It was a relatively isolated community with lots of French huguenots and Germans too who soon developped their own language.

  3. Actually they captured very little land, empire was deemed too expensive by the Dutch Republic. They didn't have the desire nor the man power to rule peoples, often more than half of their crews were foreign, Europeans but also many Asians and a few Africans. They were all about the money and the wars with far bigger European countries, and therefore controlling far away trade routes. Their power was in that they did more than half of all European trade and their tremendous wealth from that.
