Cities look much worse because there is less of the city to see because of the enormous height of modern cars parked in it, and their similar metallic grey, black, dark blue colours. Look at old city photos, with a row of low cars in different often primary colours. A row of low cars in red, blue, yellow and green looks a lot nicer.

Nothing wrong with raindrops. Citroen has been doing proper raindrops since the 50's, as in much narrower at the rear axle. If you look at the early 80s the most aerodynamically efficient cars were the Citroen CX and GSA, the Mercedes 190 and 200-300 series with their high trunks, and the mentioned bid Audis. They all looked very, very different.

@TheRealPOTUSDavidByrd An English wheel and lots of highly skilled but affordable craftsmen I guess, or maybe it's all hammered. But it's a very interesting era in car design with all those coach builders around. Saoutchick is a nice one too, and just after WWII Vignale, Zagato, Pininfarina and Ghia were still coachbuilders that did the wildest stuff.

@TheRealPOTUSDavidByrd Speaking of that thing, covering the rear wheels is easy and makes the car more aerodynamically efficient, but they don't really care enough.

@TheRealPOTUSDavidByrd Check Figoni e Falaschi Talbot and Delahayes. But the wheels tucked inside like that does not work anymore. The rear wheel covered works best with designs that show off they are front wheel drive like the Citroens did.

@loathesome_lynx Are they? Cars were designed low for aerodynamic purposes too, and big wheels needed to make height look palatable aren't efficient either. I think it's that high driving position that sells because the feeling it gives the driver.

Reminds me of the Bentley Continental GT, not my personal favourite but it''s very recognizable and is now widely appreciated while it was heavily criticized at introduction. It runs over 20 years now with minor design changes. That tends to happen to bold, controversial designs, but that is not how share holder value logic works. It would if share holders would actually hold on to their shares but it's about selling shares in the coming 5 years. That shortsightedness also trickles down to the employees. If your designed Bentley only starts to be appreciated after 5 years you already missed out on some big career steps and bonusses, no matter how much you are saving the company in the long term by having made a lasting design.
