  2. They had been dealing with the English, French, German and Spanish for centuries, how could the Japanese be any worse? Seriously, the Dutch have always looked at the world with more curiosity and less of a desire to reign and impose their culture. This is of course also because impossibility through size, but an international orientation has been part of Dutch culture for very long. They don't easily feel challenged or threatened by other culture, nor superior.
