  1. The British didn't invent anti-slavery. The Dutch Republic only gave up on it's objection to overseas slavery in 1638. Both this little and the big myth are blurring the issue as most clearly demonstrated by the Dutch Republic's turn on the matter. It's European hypocrisy, one set of rules and principles for us here in our civil and free societies, another set of rules and princpiples for the people in our overseas territories. The Europeans took 2 centuries to apply their principles to the people far away too. This same hypocrisy has been allowed to return through decolonization. It's not our jurisdiction anymore, so not our principles that apply. But using an I phone in this neo-colonial world is not less the product of slavery than the 19th century European eating chocolate or the 17th century European consuming sugar. So there is no ground to feel morally superior to our ancestors at all, and self flagellation over the past while ignoring the present doesn't make one a better person, on the contrary, just a bigger hypocrite.
