  1. Americans do celebrity and display of wealth and power more excessive than anyone else. They also love dynasties, from the Kennedies to the Bushes and the Clintons to the tv-series Dallas and Dynasty to the Kardashians. Meritocratic replubicanism is not what American society is, in their own way they might be even more classist than the British and have more of nobility in the sense of people being wealthy and powerful by birth. So it's probably just celebrity entertainment they have a connection with through their thinking. It doesn't require a more elevated explanation.
