This is nonsense, the British think they have invented something if they name it in English, but they only invented the name. The English themselves have described rich Dutch merchants eating sandwiches, as in meat or cheese on a slice of bread as early as the 1600s. It was always common people's food. There is a Dutch anecdote of the noble Maurice of Nassau, then Europe's most revered general and tactician in the middle of fighting the Spanish stopping for lunch at a local farmer's house, and getting told off by the peasant for putting both butter and cheese on his bread.
