  15.  @alanwhitehead9756  I've every sympathy for you and yes, I admit that I live in Suffolk where most things seem OK, having said that, even here there has been massive change in our small towns from early London overspill, to the London white flight over the last few years and the EU influx. So far all has mostly done is make housing scarce and unaffordable. What has led to this though is complex and a multitude of social, technological, financial political and demographic change. Its too easy to try to blame one factor. What I would say is that you may have cored for socialism but it's a two party system and the right of centre (including new Labour imo) have been in power for more than 40 years. Socialism has not been delivered, and it has been the free market economy that has driven the slaughter of public services and has increased rich poor inequality as much as anything else. I'm not a massive fan of some types of immigration but some has been necessary. I'm going to stick with blaming tories first

  30. Mostly light drizzle, all the men wore caps and whistled as they went to work to drive a steam engine,.. Nah, knackered, described as the sick man of Europe and had to be bailed out as we entered. OK post war as we rebuilt, still had manufacturing and vestiges of empire. Plenty of jobs and Britain ruled the waves etc. but globalisation, technological change and aggressive capitalism started to really bite late 60's/70's resulting in massive government battles with the working class. We struggled for a few years in Europe but the economy has improved greatly overall. Helped but not solely by Europe in isolation as we also have Mrs Thatcher to thank who improved the lot of the (now ex working class) by encouraging us and the country to sell everything that wasn't bolted down for a 50 New Pence. Our sudden embrace of the free market economy and full on globalisation has helped lead to the now large age/location/employment/earnings divides. As a baby boomer myself, I am extremely conscious of the problems faced by a lot of people, especially the young, as so much of the countries wealth has been transferred to the lucky few. Apologies for my obnoxious opening comment... Will edit that a bit..

UK is not a vassel state of Europe, although we likely would be of America if we leave.
