***** Over a fairly hefty time period, and became one of the largest economies in the world, hence able to pay a bit more. Not entirely down to EU, granted, also helped a bit by various Tory govs selling and encouraging us to sell everything and the kitchen sink, whilst racking up the debt. Still, if you look at the EU related jobs that have been created or maintained especially in the vehicle and aviation sectors, it makes you wonder where we had have been had we carried on like we where in the late 60's/70's with manufacturing on the point of collapse and the economy down the pan.
Rich/poor divide - Not all the fault of Europe, mostly self inflicted UK gov policy decisions, and it will not improve if we end up becoming some kind of low tax haven for multinationals, not renowned for sharing the dough out..
