  4. It was the average brexiteer that was likely googling 'what is the EU' the next day. I'm average, and I wouldn't for one second say I knew much about the detail of the EU until the idiot Cameron got in and made everyone start thinking about it a bit more. UKIP was, is, and will be, a lunatic fringe party. It was the deluded Tory hardliners and his 'certainty' that most people would see it as madness  that brought about his badly executed EU Ref. That was hardly a topic on most peoples political agenda's compared to the slow haul out of the last financial crisis and the austerity measures. It was a question that didn't need to be asked.

OK, hardliners is a pretty meaningless word, but there are plenty of tories, people like Peter Bone and Stuart Agnew, that are so bigoted and narrow minded that they are unable to consider anyone else's viewpoint. They put their own interests first (mistakenly in the case of Agnew who will find his corrupt inhumane chicken torturing business would suffer as a result of Trumps chlorine chicken imports). They would never be able to admit that much of what has been done by Europe has been for the benefit of normal people, or even have the intelligence to understand it. A climate change denier, anti NHS, pro life idiot like Bone would not recognise a progressive social policy if it slapped him on his bald head. At least the EU was 'hardline' for the benefit of its people.

  7. I don't believe in the centralisation of power for everyday decisions. I believe in devolvement of power to local people if possible through local council, health and education authorities. However, you also need a strategic centralised controlling influence if you want to be successful. Whilst I would love to live in a communist state, I realise it is an unachievable idea given the inherent selfishness of the human race. The socialist/capitalist policies of the EU offer a useful compromise in the face of unstoppable globalisation and technological advancement IMO (punctuation edit-prob still little marginally improved)

Bo ptah- Whilst centralisation is not the answer with everything, it is our ability to pool resources, work together, look at bigger pictures, that has also turned mankind into the most influential animal on the planet. If everyone just goes off and does their own thing, this doesn't happen...... How is the EU stampeding towards disaster historically? During it's jurisdiction, and admittedly not all down to Europe, I have gone from eating bread and jam every tea time in my parents house and wearing home knitted shorts to school to having trousers I bought in a shop and food on the table. It's global protectionist policies as well as it's human rights, are going to be need to be defended in a world dominated by China, Russia, India, soon Africa and the idiot in the US. Unfortunate, and you can't buck the system, but we will be on our own trying to do just that.. A strong Europe can make positive changes outside on the world arena, and we were a big part of Europe. It's everyone's loss IMO

Reengaging  on trading with the Commonwealth will not be like the old remnants of colonial days pre EEC when we were still merrily exploiting away and flogging everyone pre rusted Morris Marina's as a reward... And geographically it makes no sense either given the increased distance's to transport stuff.. Why not trade with your nearest neighbours (in a nice little protectionist trading bloc-lets call it some kind of European Community). And all the while trading with other countries outside of the EU as we do currently when it benefits us (OK maybe not so much arms dealing in middle east).. In fact, lets just have a 2nd Referendum... asap...

  11. dlk1dlk1-I can really see that people in so many parts of the country are pissed off with their lives, but misplaced the frustration into a protest vote against what they see as an elite (usually just the politicians that WE elect). It really wasn't enough to offer an ill advised and badly informed referendum as a solution to issues that were mostly self generated by years of Tory (and right of centre Blair) mismanagement.

Michael Hunt-While I disagree (I see the EU as a reasonably democratic organisation-given that most democratic systems are a compromise anyway)  why not try to change the bits you are not happy with by negotiation rather than withdrawing? As an example, I'm sure most of EU member states have had fingers burnt by the Syrian refugee crisis, and would think it fairly likely that Europe will begin to man up into looking into the root causes and trying to improve it's strategy in the middle east rather than just leaving everything to Putin. Everything is always up for negotiation in any organisation, but what we have done is throw the baby out with the bathwater
