This woman makes me laugh we bought the slaves from the African tribes in Benin etc why should we be any more guilty than those who originally captured and sold slaves and who had been doing so for hundreds of years before Europeans came along.

@akastewart why would I need to ask forgiveness my ancestors were never slave owners they were more likely to be serfs themselves, they should ask the royal family of Benin’s descendants for reparations they had been enslaving other inland African tribes for hundreds of years before the earliest Europeans,(the Portuguese) arrived on their shores and the British didn’t turn up until over a hundred years later.

@akastewart I don’t need to find forgiveness for an act I never committed and which I find repulsive. The problem is this certain sections of society make bad choices and now one such group is trying to work the system to get something for nothing. Perhaps the people of Britain should sue Italy, France and Norway for Reparations following the invasions of Rome, the Vikings and the Norman invasion? No it would be ridiculous to blame the people of those countries today for the actions of people from hundreds or thousands of years ago. Also why is it just the British who seem to get the brunt for this? Every nation in Earths history practised Slavery the first to stop it was us so why are we the bad guys? I think it’s because we were more successful at the practice.

@akastewart sorry Stewart but you are dead wrong the people complaining have not been wronged their ancestors maybe but even so it wasn’t me who wronged them I am closer in relationship to those that ended slavery than to those that engaged in it. Also Britain paid a lot of money and paid in the blood of its sailors to end the trade in the Atlantic. Why are these people not 😢 me about the slavery that still exists in the world? It’s because they see our politicians as soft touches who are afraid of being called a bad name, this is the price we pay for the way out political class destroyed the career of Enoch Powell

Why would anyone listen the Prince Harry he managed to get. C in Art with the finest education money could by.

@akastewart the government if coerced into paying reparations would do so by raising taxes, those taxes would be paid in the overwhelming majority by people who gained nothing from the slave trade and often suffered because of it.

@akastewart we raised a monumental amount of debt instead a debt we incurred by enforcing the end of the trans Atlantic slave trade something no other nation other than the USA has done in any form, I think all the other countries should raise their monuments first. As to what normal people gained most of that actually came as an effect of the industrial resolution the slave trade mainly benefitted the elites of the generation where as the free labour it provided actually left the poor British working population undercut and with not bartering power in the work market.

@akastewart like I said previously any debt we had was paid by the lives of British sailors and the cost to the Empire of abolishing slavery.

@akastewart seems like you have a real virtue signalling need for this subject Stewart perhaps your family had something to do with the slave trade and you feel guilt by association but whatever the reason the rest of the rational world doesn’t want to play this zero sum game where the complainers are never satisfied and just keep demanding more. It could be argued that thanks to the suffering their ancestors endured these same descendants now live the most privileged lives of any black people around the world perhaps they would prefer living in backwards villages in the middle of the jungle or plains having to struggle every day to survive. Seems to me they got a sweet deal yes their ancestors suffered but there is no way to recompense those people now.

@mauricealexander3834 well I must say I am absolutely terrified now, oh wait a book that actually promotes slavery has the effrontery to also condemn those that participate and their descendants, your god is such a stand up guy isn’t he? Punishing people for the actions of their ancestors, actions which he had previously condoned.

@mauricealexander3834 I won’t be crying later unless it’s crying with laughter at the strange ideas that religious zealots keep coming up with to try to ease their fear of the unknown. Let me tell you something the bible is a book written by men to control other men.
