Napolean was massively overrated and an incompetent who took credit for others' victories and got his butt handed to him by the turks and blamed it on his underling and abandoned the entire army to its fate when things went sour so that is not saying much.

If you were really competent you generally never got to lead in the first place, which is probably true today too because there is always corruption. Or you were like vespasian who was a giant war hero then immediately banished to the hinterlands. Of course that ended up working out for him and he wound up as emperor.
