Of course they can fix it, they can fix anything. But at what cost and how strapped for cash are they? In their overextended position even if it were undamaged then simply getting back the full ship value in insurance would be a strong motive even if repair cost were zero. Though obviously then there is no need for a switch. Not saying this is true, more compelling though is that all the people resisting the creation of the 'national' bank were on the ship and the ones who invited them pulled out at the last minute. Much bigger motive. There's actually icebergs constantly on the route so with no accessible binoculars on board and steaming fast through the night the result was very predictable.

Yes because being damaged in a way it is unsound in the long term means you can't make full speed a few days. And because you sometimes spend 3x the cost of a ship to repair a warship in time of war that takes years to build, it is totally easy and economical to replace the keel or girders of the largest ship on earth. Makes perfect sense to me.
