My hot take?? Well, co pilots under duress don't have a probability calculator chip implanted into their brains. If they knew with certainty that the plane was gonna crash, they might speak up. Tis better to be alive and unemployed than a dead former airline pilot. However, I assume that the culture of the company has a large influence on the crew beyond any interpersonal dynamics between the captain and first officer. The first officer under these circumstances assumes that the captain is not an incompetent bafoon and that the situation, although an emergency, can be corrected. He may see something not quite to his liking but thinks that if he challenges the captain and the crew lives to see another day with a safe landing, the captain will see to it that the company cuts the first officer's hours or has him demoted or fired. We also don't know about how the Korean legal system and culture treat whistle blowers. Would the first officer lose face? Would his family and children be shunned? So, what's really called for is a deep cultural sea change at both the company level and government level when it comes to these safety sensitive positions.

@340ACP What you are saying makes sense. Being the captain of an airliner is a HUGE responsibility that comes with a lot of authority. It makes sense that certain personalities with domineering tendencies would seek out that position. I look at the case of the KLM incident at Tenerife. The captain of that flight was a bully. He aggressively over rode his crew's concerns about the less than optimal conditions for take off and hundreds of people lost their lives as a consequence. Still, I think that airlines have enough psychometric tools at their disposal to weed out people like this before they even get their license to fly.
