Let us assume that the base salary for a Fortune 500 company is 2 million/year. With bonuses, it came to 14 million. Let's assume again that said company has 100 K employees. If said CEO were to be a nice guy or gal and evenly distribute that 12 million surplus, it would add up to $120 per employee...kinda underwhelming. Let us assume that the more agressive and less generous CEO drove the company towards higher levels of growth and productivity, thus being able to afford to pay higher average wages and benefits to the employees, which would help to retain qualified employees and attract top shelf talent when some people inevitably leave the organization, thus driving more profit and growth. The CEO in this 2nd hypothetical scenario got a bonus of 20 million last year, on top of the 2 million base salary, but now you are making an additional $2 per hour with better benefits. I can safely assume you would want to work for the more agressive CEO.
