I try to remind myself every time I get in the car, that everyone else out there is a complete idiot raised by wolves, so I will not be taken aback by their outrageous, ignorant, selfish behaviour - and when someone actually signals when they're supposed to, or lets you get into the lane you obviously need to get into, it's a nice bonus, like a 'random act of kindness'.

  4. Yup, the eye contact and the nod have served me well over the years. I think the combination of a hard look and a sociable gesture throws them off a bit. And I'm not a big guy.

  6. I've always envied guys whose default is the smile. My default is the hard look - I'm not a big guy, but I guess I can look like I'm not a pushover, anyway. But the smile is better.

When I was a young guy, I developed the habit of looking around a bar as soon as I stepped in - it was just a perfectly natural glance around the room that wouldn't be taken as a challenge by anyone - however, I would make mental notes: "Don't look over in that corner again; watch out for that guy over there", etc. You want to stay aware of what and who is around you without catching anyone's eye.

  8. When I was in my thirties, and had long stopped doing any kind of physical training, other than some running, maybe, I had a judo bout with a teenager - two weeks later, I said to myself, 'Yeah, I beat him - but I know I'm still hurting more than he is!' So - same idea on a smaller scale ... !
