  1. The universities are full of intelligent, eloquent, domineering personalities who speak with absolute authority. Don't lose yourself to one of them - think for yourself, and at the same time, pay attention to your 'gut feeling'. Walk away if you must, and take the risk of being relegated to some category of failed persons. I'm just talking about intellectual relationships here, despite the obvious analogy with the more 'personal'. When someone like Peterson talks about what life is all about, he's really talking about HIS life, just as when he gives interpretations of Biblical symbology, they are HIS interpretations (or those he favours of other thinkers).

  2. I wouldn't call it "utter nonsense"; I'd call it "a creative interpretation" - how interesting or useful it is, is another matter, but I imagine any Bible scholar would give it short shrift.

I have a number of my own little doodles in cheap frames hung up here and there in the house, and I have a couple of competent paintings of flowers from thrift stores, and a few prints of Aboriginal art. If I catch myself worrying about what they say about 'my taste', I take that as a sign of weakness of character - I mean, do I want to live my life fretting about what Jordan Peterson would think? These things bring me a measure of joy, and they're there for me, not to impress some aesthete who I invite home after a wine-and-cheese reception at the faculty lounge.
