@Edax_Royeaux Indeed, not many people know this fact, because the USA was officially neutral at that time.
Another fact not well known is that Roosevelt and Churchill had been in contact and were discussing plans for war with Germany in the mid 1930's already, years before Churchill was even prime minister of Britain.
A couple of books that deal with these and other circumstances are "Churchill and Hitler, the Unnecessary War" by Pat Buchanan. Another book is "Germany's War" by John Wear. I could cite at least another dozen with similar theme.
When France and Britain formally declared war on Germany, the USA joined them by supplying war material and ships to Britain, while arresting German ships in US harbours at that time.
The US fired at German naval vessels on the Atlantic, and interfered with German shipping, all this while officially neutral.
Note that during this time German ships did not fire upon American vessels in fact, the Germans did their best to avoid any confrontation with the USA.
The USA aggressiveness got so bad that the German government finally declared war on the USA so that legal commands could be given in Germany for its navy to fight back.
Trust this explains things, please feel free to ask additional questions.
